President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has handed over to the Ministry of Health (MoH) a total of 10,000 hospital beds that will be distributed in the hospitals of the 275 electoral districts of the country.
This comes as part of a 2016 campaign pledge by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) aimed at improving health care delivery and infrastructure in Ghana.
The initiative, which is within the framework of the government’s Poverty Eradication Infrastructure Program (IPEP), has the main objective of eliminating the “no-bed syndrome” that occurs in the country’s hospitals.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, the President said: “It is always disconcerting to see patients being treated in wheelchairs, plastic chairs and even on the floor due to lack of beds. The government’s determination to see an end to this ‘no-bed syndrome’ has resulted in the decision to purchase these hospital beds and their associated accessories for distribution throughout the country to increase the number in the country. ”
“In total, 1,500 pieces of intensive care beds with top tables, 2,000 pieces of standard hospital beds with bedside lockers, 4,000 pieces of health center beds with bedside lockers, 1,000 pieces of infant cribs and 1,500 delivery beds ”, Akufo -Explained Addo.
Deputy Health Minister Tina Gifty Mensah, who received the beds on behalf of the ministry, was optimistic that the distribution will ensure that the ‘no-bed syndrome’ in some of the country’s hospitals becomes a thing of the past.
“The beds are being distributed to all health facilities, especially health facilities completed without the necessary complement of medical equipment and medical furniture. The ChIPS compounds have also been prioritized to ensure clients’ access to health services, ”she said.
The Minister of Special Development Initiative, Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson, for her part, said that the beds were purchased within the framework of 1 million dollars per electoral district (1M1C) to solve the problem of inadequate beds in hospitals.
