The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Responsibility (ASEPA) demands the removal of the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, from his position for incompetence.
A report from ASEPA and with a copy to the Office of the President, explained that the lack of the Special Prosecutor’s Office to complete a single case in the last thirty months justifies its request.
In an interview with Citi News, ASEPA Executive Director Mensah Thompson recommended the invocation of proceedings under Article 146 to charge Mr. Amidu with his position.
He added that the office’s ineffectiveness is not due to a lack of government funding for its investigations.
“Our appeal is based on your incompetence. We believe that there have been a number of issues emanating from the Special Prosecutor’s office that raise questions about the competence of Mr. Martin Amid. The Office of the Special Prosecutor returned unspent budget funds or unused appropriations to the government coffers. It means that the government has given the Special Prosecutor a lot of money that it could even use, and they returned [it] back to the government, so the office is getting the necessary resources and support from the government, but unfortunately, the result has been minimal. ”
Mr. Mensah Thompson urged the presidency to independently evaluate Mr. Amidu and make a decision in the interest of the Ghanaians.
“In fact, since 2017, we have not seen a single prosecution by the office. So why do we continue to hold Martin Amidu in his place so that we send a copy of our report to the president and hope that the presidency will act on the proper assessment of the office? The presidency must use their own discretion to decide whether they want to keep him in office or not. According to the law, as it is, you cannot change him and appoint a new person, but because his stature is like that of a Supreme Court judge, the processes of Article 146 can be invoked. ”
