Only a few MPs in the current Parliament are really working – Inusah Fuseini

Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini has revealed that only a few lawmakers in the current legislature are actually working as prescribed by the constitution.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The exit, observed that although the Seventh Parliament of the IV Republic has worked a lot due to the massive innovation that is being introduced, the records indicate that many deputies are in the Chamber for other purposes.

“Because a lot of money has been put into politics today, people come to Parliament with the mentality of recouping whatever investment they made to get elected, especially if they are in the ruling party… and we see that in this Parliament.

That’s why you hear about absenteeism from time to time. This is because people are fighting to win contracts with the government so that they can recover what they lost, so that they do not go to court, “he said.

He then added: “Even during Committee sessions, participate in Parliament’s oversight jurisdiction in a way that clearly shows that they are interested in some profit and not the actual work.

Mr. Fuseini is one of the most experienced parliamentarians in the Ghanaian legislative body.

He first won the Tamale Central seat in a 2006 by-election and has held the seat ever since.

But the former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources will not compete in the 2020 general elections after he decided to resign from active politics.

Commenting on his 14-year career as a legislator, Mr. Fuseini said that each term of Parliament he served was different.

For him, although the duties were the same, the individuals that make up the Parliament were always different, which affected the result of the Chamber.

“Furthermore, no Parliament is the same because the margin between the opposition and the ruling party in all the previous ones was very narrow. And the governance structure that we have requires the president to appoint at least 51% of his ministers to Parliament.

“Therefore, a substantial number of parliamentarians of the ruling government will not be at all times material in Parliament and this forces the majority to compromise with the minority.

“But in this current Parliament, the NPP has 169, while the NDC has 106 seats, that is why sometimes the Minority can be treated with impunity; because they don’t need the minority, ”he said.
