A stalwart of the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP) has dispelled rumors that the selection of Professor Jana Naana Opoku-Agyemang as John Dramani Mahama’s running mate for the upcoming elections shook the PNP camp.

According to Stephen Asamoah Boateng, popularly known as Asa B, although Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s record was excellent as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she failed where it mattered most: as Minister of Education in John Mahama’s administration between 2008 and 2008 2016.

“She was good at what she did when she was at Cape Coast University… but not when she was Minister of Education. She did not perform well. They’ve heard all the stories about subsidies … and training and salaries and all that, ”he said.

Asa B made the remarks on PM Express, a current affairs show on Joy News on Monday, September 21, 2020, in response to a question about her evaluation of the ‘John & Jane’ ticket.

The selection of Professor Opoku-Agyemang as a candidate for standard-bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been touted as a masterstroke.

Many political experts say that the NDC campaign could not have selected a better running mate due to Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s stellar career and his rich achievements in academia and politics.

While acknowledging that Professor Opoku-Agyemang has an excellent track record in academia, Asa B, who is a former Minister of Information, said that is where he ends.

“For me, it is good news that [NDC] we finally have a running mate, but that doesn’t put us in panic mode. In fact, Vice President Dr. [Mahamudu] Bawumia said it: ‘no matter who they bring in, it won’t change the incompetence of the leader,’ ”he said.

The current Director General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) also said he is surprised that former President John Mahama wants to return as president after losing heavily in 2016.

“I’m surprised that my friend John Mahama wants to come back and have a second bite. What is it you couldn’t do in eight years … what do you want to do now? ” I ask.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang adds nothing to the NDC 2020 campaign because what matters is John Mahama’s record as a former president, he added.
