A 42-year-old catechist who defrauded a queen on the pretext of finding a Mallam to excavate some gold deposits for her has been taken into police custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court.
Samuel Marfo is said to have told the author, who is the queen of Amakye-Bare in the northern Atwima-Nwabiagya district, that he knew a Mallam who could help excavate and recover some gold deposits on her farm.
He, along with the Mallam, managed to collect around GH ¢ 6,000.00 from the queen and escaped.
His statement was not accepted and he would reappear before the court presided over by Johnson Abbey on September 29 of this year.
Police Inspector Ruth Gborson told the court that the author resided in Asuofia-Asaamang, while the accused was a farmer and catechist in Abuakwa, Atwima-Nwabiagya South Municipality.
He said that somewhere in February this year, the defendant claimed to have detected some gold deposits on the complainant’s farm and knew of a Mallam who could excavate and retrieve it for the complainant.
The complainant agreed and the accused demanded GH ¢ 1,200.00 for the paperwork.
The complainant added GH ¢ 100.00 to the accused as a means of transportation to bring the Mallam.
The prosecution said that when the defendant brought the Mallam, he also demanded ¢ 4,000.00 GH from the complainant and told her that he would prepare and return.
Inspector Gborson said that after collecting the money, the two went into hiding.
A report was made to the Asuofua police who detained the accused at his hiding place.
Inspector Gborson said police were still investigating the case.
