President Akufo-Addo approved the decision of the Ghana Football Association for the 2020-21 season to start in October.
The president announced on Sunday that the Ghana Premier League and other national competitions will begin in the month announced by the Association in July after they canceled the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
”Regarding football, after due consultation with the Ghana Football Association, it has been decided that the Ghana Premier League and the Football First Division will restart on Friday 30th October with a full testing regime of the players, coaches and management personnel, ”he said.
The president announced that 25% of fans will be able to enter stadiums when the season begins.
“No spectators will be allowed in training centers and when actual competition resumes, seating in all stadiums will be limited to twenty-five percent (25%) of capacity to ensure social distancing. The use of masks by the spectators in the stadiums will be mandatory. “
Akufo-Addo has also lifted the contact sport ban, which means teams can start training with immediate effect for the season.
Soccer activities were halted in March following the outbreak of the deadly virus, which has killed 297 people in the country.
However, the president in July gave the go-ahead for some national teams – Men’s Under-17, Women’s Under-20 and Under-17 – to begin camping before their respective qualifiers later this year.
For other sports competitions, the president revealed that their restart will be “determined on a case-by-case basis, pending consultations between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the respective sports associations.”
