The Police Department of Transport and Motor Traffic (MTTD) has cited speeding as the main factor contributing to Saturday’s fatal accident, which claimed the lives of six Ghanaian colt players.

Four other youth players aboard the KIA minibus involved in the disaster, and whose condition remained critical, are currently admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Komfo Anokye University Hospital (KATH).

“Preliminary police investigations have found the driver guilty of speeding and overloading,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Edmund Nyamekye, in charge of Offinso Municipal MTTD Command, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA ).

In total, 36 people, including; Youth soccer players and drivers from the Africa Vision Soccer Academy were aboard the vehicle with registration AS 928-12.

According to police, the KIA minibus sank in the Offin River as players and officers were dispatched to its base after a league registration exercise in Afrancho on the Kumasi-Offinso highway.

“The minibus far exceeded its seating capacity,” DSP Nyamekye told the GNA, saying that the driver in the course of the team’s trip lost control of the accelerating vehicle.

Consequently, it veered from its lane and struck a concrete fence that separated the river from a section of road, then plunged into the body of water.

The other 26 young players and team officials, who suffered varying degrees of injuries in the fatal accident, were sent to St. Patrick’s and Naamon SDA Hospitals, all in the municipality of Offinso, for treatment.
