With the signing of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur now have two solid left-backs who will compete for the minute, including Ben Davies. With the signing of Gareth Bale, the Spurs are now absolutely stacked in the wide positions of the offensive midfield.
So where does that leave Ryan Sessegnon? Signed from Fulham last summer and Tottenham’s longtime target, there doesn’t seem to be a place for Sess at the full-back and it’s hard to see where he will get minutes this season.
The answer, according to Football.London Alasdair Gold, is that Sessegnon will get his minutes elsewhere. Gold reports that the club plans to put Sessegnon on loan before the transfer window closes in October to continue developing him as an offensive left back.
Mauricio Pochettino largely hinted that Sess’s future position lagged behind, but that he wasn’t quite ready for the job. Before he got fired. Poch had plans to play Sessegnon in rotation at the left midfield position with Son Heung-Min, before eventually moving him back to fullback. That still seems to be the plan. The difference is that there just aren’t enough minutes for him to develop at the Spurs.
Gold is quite convinced that the club still thinks highly of Sessegnon, who is still only 20 years old, and that the idea of a loan is not an indication that they are looking to move on. Mourinho compared Sess to Ashley Cole, and Gold notes that there is a “frenzy” of interest in taking Ryan on loan this season, both within the Premier League and abroad. Ajax is rumored to have been a potential destination.
It is a good plan. Mourinho has been making noise saying his team is too big, but Sess is too young to give up now, especially considering his precocious dominance of the Championship as a teenager in Fulham. This feels like a good move. Hopefully he can land somewhere that uses and develops him, so that when it’s time to move Ben Davies, Sess is ready to take on the role.
