Australia’s High Commissioner in Ghana, Gregory Andrews, has joined the Ghana Wildlife Society, more than 100 volunteers and other associated sanitation agencies to clean up Accra’s Laboma Beach.
The cleaning exercise is part of the activities to mark September 19 as World Cleaning Day 2020.
The diplomat who seems to have a peculiar interest in Ghanaian society was deeply involved in dredging a dirty pond on the banks and cleaning up trash on the beach at Laboma.
Even the heavy rains in the morning could not prevent him from participating vigorously in the exercise for which he campaigned extensively on his social media platforms days before the event.
The High Commissioner entered the drowned pond to catch plastic debris and other dirty objects to make way for stagnant water that flows into the sea.
In a brief post-exercise interaction, he told freelance journalist and vlogger Selorm Helen that he is passionate about the environment and would therefore do his part to create a safer planet to safeguard human life and life. the animals.
He reiterated the Australian government’s commitment to preserving nature, one reason why the manufacture and use of most plastic products has been banned.
The High Commissioner expressed his concern about plastic pollution, a global problem that affects the climate and quality of life.
He called the general public to action and advised against littering, especially on beaches to save lives.
“I came here with the World Cleanup Day hashtag because I care deeply about the environment. In reality, plastic was only invented about 10 years before I was born, but now there is a lot of plastic in the environment and it is damaging nature and it has also started to harm us as human beings because it enters the food chain. That is why I am very passionate about creating a safer planet for the future, ”she said.
“The Australian government is committed and has very good policies to protect nature and many state governments in Australia, for example, have banned plastic bags,” he revealed.
Gregory Andrews yesterday presented his credentials to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to previously begin his ambassadorial duties as Australian High Commissioner to Ghana.
Prior to this, the envoy has enjoyed his stay in Ghana while sharing his daily social routine with the world on social media.
She won the hearts of many Ghanaians with her humble lifestyle, which includes getting her hair cut carefully at local barber shops and patronizing Ghanaian-made products such as African patterned clothing.
World Cleanup Day is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global problem of solid waste, including the problem of marine debris. It is coordinated by the Estonian organization Let’s Do It! World.
Louisa Kabobah, Conservation Education Officer for the Ghana Wildlife Society, says Laboma Beach is a nesting site for sea turtles, one reason it was chosen for the cleanup.
He said that sea turtles are critically endangered, “so it is very necessary that we go clean the beach to prevent them from becoming entangled with these plastics.”
He urged Ghanaians to actively participate in the campaign for a safer planet by keeping the environment clean.
