NDC standard-bearer John Mahama says his government, after awarding grants to Assembly members, will assign additional responsibility to their existing roles.
Speaking at a meeting with Concerned Assembly Members in the East Bono Region, he stated that the NDC is seeking to implement a system that ensures automatic updating of the Birth and Death Registry.
The assembly members will then be trained to play the role of “counselors” who will take details of a newborn or a dead person, he explained.
“Digitization has made it very simple. If you even have a smartphone, they put the app on it and you have the space for the necessary information. “
“Anyone goes to the Assemblymen, fills in the details, and then when they’re done, they hit submit and it automatically enters the district’s birth and death registry and updates the national one as well.”
John Mahama stated that if Ghana adopts this system, it will be easier to make projections for some policies and keep an accurate record of the country’s population.
John Mahama first announced that his party will pay assembly members during a meeting with the Ghana Assembly Members Association in July.
He said the allocations will be paid for with the savings his government will make by drastically reducing the number of ministers in its next administration in 2021 or enrolling them in the consolidated fund.
During his meeting with the Assemblymen of Bono East, the Past President affirmed that it is essential to pay them to fulfill their functions.
He also added that his party will also buy motorcycles for assembly members to fulfill their duties after winning the December 2020 elections.
