Chelsea have finally reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from French club Rennes.
After weeks of haggling, Mendy will team up for a fee of just over £ 20 million with the 28-year-old who will now arrive in London to complete a medical exam.
Mendy’s signing has been made on the recommendation of technical and performance advisor Petr Cech, together with his former coach, Christophe Lollichon, who still works at Chelsea.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard wanted a new goalkeeper after a series of disappointing performances by Kepa Arrizabalaga, the latest of which came in a win over Brighton.
Mendy will now fight Kepa for Chelsea’s No. 1 spot, and the club hopes that the additional competition will bring out the best in both men.
Another of Chelsea’s summer signings, Timo Werner, has become the latest high-profile footballer to join Common Goal.
Werner has joined the charity movement, launched by former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, which uses football to help vulnerable children and youth around the world.
Common Goal members donate a minimum of one percent of their salaries to a collective fund that invests in high-impact charities.
Forward Werner, who is believed to earn around £ 170,000 a week at Chelsea, has become the club’s first male player to join Common Goal alongside Chelsea Women stars Magda Eriksson and Pernille Harder.
“I feel very privileged to be able to live my dream playing in the Premier League with Chelsea,” said Werner, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig. “At the same time, I am well aware of the fact that there are people around the world who are currently struggling to address the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. That is why I would like to help the best I can through Common Goal.
“The best thing about the movement is that I decide where my money goes. There are certain issues that particularly affect me and I am also interested in supporting and launching projects in Stuttgart and Leipzig. The more famous footballers involved, the more awareness we can create for Common Goal. And if only one player or fan donates 10 euros because Timo Werner is involved, then that’s great. ”
Werner will make his Stamford Bridge debut for Chelsea on Sunday against Liverpool, which is coached by another Common Goal member, Jurgen Klopp.
