Sampson Awingobit, a hopeful standard-bearer for the People’s National Convention (PNC), accused the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) of stealing his idea of corporate tax exemption and incorporating it into its 2020 manifesto.
Awingobit told Blessed Sogah on the State of the Nation show on Class91.3FM on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, that the NDC stole his idea a few days after he made it public during an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
During the launch of the 2020 NDC manifesto, former president John Mahama, who is the party’s standard bearer, said that his next government, should it win the polls, will grant tax breaks to startups and small and medium-sized businesses. (SME).
Mahama said that freeing up start-ups and SMEs from paying taxes will give them the opportunity to facilitate growth and expansion.
According to him, the next NDC government will work to formalize the informal sector, as it accounts for about 90 percent of employment but only contributes about 30 percent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He said his government will ensure that by encouraging the creation of small business associations (SBAs), assisting the sector through continuous streamlining of compliance processes, strengthening the capacity of the National Small-Scale Industries Board (NBSSI ) and provide special financial support to market women and entrepreneurs.
