IMANI Africa policy think tank vice chair Kofi Bentil has questioned the NDC’s promise to pay Ghanaian Premier League players an average salary of ¢ 1,500 per month.
Bentil took to social media to ask why a government “would pay footballers to play soccer.”
His is based on the fact that Ghana’s Premier League clubs are registered as private companies whose main staff are the players.
He insisted that “there is no reason why I shouldn’t pay my private company staff” if players are paid to play soccer.
Bentil’s comment stems from a promise made by the Democratic National Congress communications director Sammy Gyamfi, who revealed the match plan for Ghana’s Premier League players should they win power.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC plans to pay an average of ¢ 1,500 monthly allowances to all Ghana’s top-tier league players. “
“The NDC will establish a sports development fund. The government will provide enough money to the account and it will also generate some corporate entities ”.
“All the clubs that play in the Premier League will be supported with funds to settle the salaries of the players. Each player will be paid an average money of ¢ 1,500.00 GH ”.
He added that NDC will also establish a sports development fund that will address all investments in the sports sector, while the Ghanaian clubs representing the country in CAF interclub competitions will receive financial support.
It is not the first time that the promise of the NDC has been questioned. President Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s former cousin highlighted the cost of keeping the promise to taxpayers and dismissed it, saying the NDC doesn’t mean it.
Sports development has taken center stage this week as one of the main pillars of the campaign ahead of the December 2020 elections.
