The Government has suspended the implementation of the law that prohibits the importation of salvaged vehicles of more than 10 years into the country.

The 2020 Customs Amendment Act, which was passed in Parliament in March this year, was supposed to go into effect on November 1, 2020.

Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) Tema regional chairman Alex Asiamah, in an interview on Accra-based radio station Citi FM, said that the Tema Port Customs Commander announced the suspension.

“This same night I received information informing the general public, interested parties and the importing public that Customs will continue to carry out its normal clearance of said vehicles. The importers can then continue their business of importing such cars. So that’s the news right now. It comes from the Ministry [of Finance], but through our sector commander, the Subcommander of Customs of Tema ”, he said.

The 2020 Customs Amendment Act, among other things, provides incentives for car manufacturers and assemblers registered with the Ghana Car Manufacturers Program and prohibits the import of salvaged motor vehicles and cars older than ten years into the country.

It was approved by Parliament in March and is expected to be implemented in November 2020.

The government’s announcement to implement such a law as of November 1, 2020 was met with much agitation by industry players, including the Ghana Automobile and Parts Dealers Association Coalition, as well as freight forwarders who had threatened with organizing a protest rally. against the implementation of the law.

Alex Asiamah insisted that the law really bothered car importers.

“You can recall that when the news came, the importers or dealers of those cars weren’t happy about it and then it even went off in different directions to make it look strange,” he said.

He indicated that based on the suspension of the law, “for us as freight forwarders, we will continue to enjoy our business of providing this type of car to our customers and when that happens, it means that we will continue to enjoy the service, so it is good news” .
