Some current and former Assembly members from the 18 constituencies in the Volta region have endorsed the NDC standard-bearer, John Mahama’s promise to pay a monthly salary to Assembly members when they are elected as president of the republic in the upcoming December elections.
Among the campaign promises made by the former president, he promised to pay monthly salaries to all elected members of the assembly throughout the country, this to allow them to collect accurate information on deaths and births for the government.
This, according to the assembly members at a press conference held on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 in Ho, will go the way of empowering them.
The president of the group that calls itself the Association of Progressive Assemblymen, Ms. Martha MA Gato-Lagble, said the idea will not only empower them, but will also “serve as a bait for hesitant but more qualified personalities with varied backgrounds to participate in the local activity. governance system to inject more efficiency and effectiveness into how MMDAs are executed “
He added that by giving the salary it will be “even more refreshing to assign an additional role to the members of the assembly to collect information on deaths and births in their various electoral areas in case HE John Mahama wins the next election,” he said.
The progressive members of the assembly, numbering almost 500, indicated that Mr. John Mahama can keep the promise because “it was under his tenure as vice president that motorcycles were delivered to all members of the assembly in Ghana. This is historic, if not unprecedented, in the fourth republic. Therefore, we can say with certainty that this promise will come true with HE John Mahama as president. “
The coordinator, Ms. Martha GA emphasized when asking the former president, when he becomes president in January 2021, to assign a percentage of the Common Fund of the District Assembly (DACF) to “each electoral area that could be called Common Fund of the Electoral Area (EACF) to allow assembly members to undertake the development of their communities. Of this we are sure, it will complete the agenda of empowerment of the assembly members ”.
Borsontoe Election Area Assemblywoman in Ho Soxefia Sefadzi Agama, in an interview after the meeting, said those funds can be used to build community sewers, street lighting and pay school fees for disadvantaged students.
