Black Stars forward Jordan Ayew has admitted that being the son of the legendary Abedi Ayew Pele has put immense pressure on his football career.
Jordan, who plays for Crystal Palace in the English Premiership, believes his career would not have been easy if he had not been named after Ayew.
Ayew’s legacy
The 29-year-old attacker has been in splendid form since joining the Palace from Swansea City in 2018. He scored nine goals in the English Premier League last season to help his side finish 14th.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Jordan noted that people expect more from him every time he plays for the national team because of his family ties.
“There is pressure with being an Ayew, of course,” he said. “Whenever you go somewhere, people just say, ‘It’s because of his dad.”
“Did I ever think my career would have been easier if I wasn’t an Ayew? It certainly would have been different.
Fan pressure
“People at home expect a lot from us,” he emphasized. “Sometimes when I play for the national team, I see my family in the stadium and I see their faces, it’s like they have more pressure than us.
“Sometimes my mom and my aunts can’t watch because they hear the comments of the people around them, it’s just a soccer game,” he revealed.
Praise
Jordan is the third of three children in the Ayew family. His older brother Andre plays for Swansea City in the English Championship, while Ibrahim is part of FC Europa in Gibraltar.
He praised his father for raising the bar and setting a standard for them to aspire to break those soccer records.
“But I am very proud to be part of this family. Dad has raised the bar so high. It has made us proud and elevated the family to a new level.
“It is not always easy for us who come from behind to represent, although we are doing everything possible to keep the last name as high as possible,” he added.
