Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cut the grass on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, for the construction of the first interchange in the western region at a ceremony in Takoradi.
This historic exchange, which is part of the Sinohydro agreement, will be built at the PTC roundabout in Takoradi and brings to six the number of exchanges that the Akufo-Addo government has initiated in its first term.
The others are; the Tema exchange, which has been completed, the Obetsebi Lamptey, Pokuase, Nungua and Tamale exchanges.
Speaking at the lawn mowing ceremony, Vice President Bawumia said that the construction of the interchange, which will improve the free flow of traffic in Takoradi, is part of the government’s broader vision of providing infrastructure for all, as well as the specific program of the government to improve road infrastructure. in the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi.
“The construction of the PTC Interchange fits into the Government’s program to improve the Sekondi-Takoradi road infrastructure and modernize the twin city,” said Dr. Bawumia.
Dr Bawumia added that in addition to the construction of the PTC interchange, the Akufo-Addo government is also carrying out road improvements within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, such as the road network around the Paa Grant roundabout. , which is also scheduled to become an exchange, to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital.
He further noted that Accra Road, Sekondi Road from the Paa Grant roundabout, as well as Adiembra Road from Effia Nkwanta Hospital will be extended to expressways.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the Akufo-Addo government’s strategy for infrastructure development is to provide people with their real needs at both urban and rural levels to assist in economic activities.

The vice president said that the construction of the first Takoradi interchange will significantly address traffic congestion in the city, especially in the areas of the PTC and Paa Grant roundabouts, which said that data from the Department of Urban Roads estimates traffic congestion at a 4.5%, higher than the national estimate of 3.5%.
“The need for road improvements through the Central Business District will increase with the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle into a modern shopping center and the Port Expansion Project to position Takoradi as a major port for commodity exports.” .
As part of the massive road development in the Sekondi-Takoradi municipality, Dr. Bawumia noted that the Butua lagoon and the railway bridge on Adiembra Road will be expanded to accommodate the expressways.
He also announced that the Cabinet approved the loan and commercial agreement for the construction of Phase 1 of the Paa Grant interchange and works on these projects are expected to begin before the end of the year.
The construction of the PTC interchange is part of Phase 1 of the Sino Hydro projects, which include; Accra Inner City Roads, Kumasi Inner City Roads, Tamale Interchange Project, Adenta – Dodowa Expressway, Sunyani Inner City Roads, Western Region Roads and the interior of the Cape coast.
The remainder is the improvement of selected secondary roads in Ashanti and western regions, the rehabilitation of the Akim Oda-Ofoase-New Abirem roads and the Hohoe -Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu road.
After mowing the grass for the construction of the Kwame Nkrumah interchange, Dr. Bawumia also inspected the ongoing road works on the Kansaworodo road in Takoradi.
