The Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea has supported the Electoral Commission (EC) by charging a filing fee of 100,000 Ghc for presidential candidates and 10,000 Ghc for aspiring parliamentarians.
The EC revealed the filing fee at its “Let The Citizen Know” press conference in Accra, Monday, September 14, 2020.
In statements to the media, the president of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa, highlighted the presentation process, saying that “the presidential candidate must deposit an amount of 100,000 Ghc in the form of a bank draft to the Commission, the parliamentary candidates They will need to deposit Ghc 10,000 in draft form from the bankers as well. We wish the best to all candidates for the presidential and parliamentary elections, we trust that the nomination process will be efficient, smooth and orderly … “.
In addressing the submission fee for Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Nana Akomea believes that the amount is to discourage non-serious political parties from participating in the 2020 elections.
According to him, the money will help the electoral management body to sift through the candidates.
“They want the people who put forward their nomination to be serious people so that no one wakes up to do something and gets 2% or 1% to waste time. I think money is one of the ways they are using to make money.” to have serious candidates or serious political parties. “
However, he was of the opinion that the EC should have held a stakeholder meeting with all political parties prior to submitting the filing fee in order to establish consensus with the parties.
