The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in a joint operation with the Ghanaian Armed Forces on Thursday 10 September intercepted four commercial vehicles en route to Takoradi.
The vehicles were carrying illegal West African nationals who were subsequently arrested.
According to the GIS, intelligence was collected on illegal activities along the border, leading to the special joint operation.
“In total, thirty-six (36) ECOWAS citizens were intercepted at different sections of the Elubo-Takoradi highway and escorted back to the Elubo border for a proper inspection and investigation.”
The operation was led by Chief Superintendent Joshua Kraku.
Among the West African citizens arrested, three are Ivorians, two are Nigerians, seven are Liberians, seven are Nigerians and 17 are Beninois.
“The investigations carried out indicate that all the suspects had entered the country by an unidentified illegal route in the Municipality of Jomoro, in the Western Region, with the assistance of some criminals in exchange for a fee.
“Intelligence from those communities indicates that to outwit the officers deployed to prevent travelers from crossing the western border, some of the canoe operators and commercial drivers arrange to transport these recalcitrant travelers into the country.
“Upon reaching the Ghana side of the river, the drivers take on the responsibility of smuggling them to their intended destinations across the country.”
The detainees were between 10 and 53 years old.
They were screened for coronavirus before being handed over to the Ivorian authorities in Noe.
“It is our opinion considered, as the Command, that such excessive behavior is not only a threat to consolidate the collective achievements made in our fight to defeat the feared COVID-19 pandemic, but also an affront to the President’s directive to maintain our borders. still closed until further notice “.
“The severity of the security challenges that this represents for our country, has caused new operational strategies, in terms of greater vigilance and collaborations, hence the positive results.”
