Discussions about reverting mission schools to Missions will reopen if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returns to government, said Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, NDC vice president candidate.
According to her, although the previous NDC administration was prepared to hand over the mission schools, discussions with the Missions about their arrangements to run the schools were inconclusive.
“We are prepared to deliver, but we have to make sure that the Missions have the capacity to run the schools effectively,” he said.
A statement signed by Mawuena Trebarh, his spokesperson and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the Running Mate said it during an interaction with clergy from the Diocese of Sekondi of the Methodist Church in Sekondi as part of his tour of campaign for the western region. .
The government took over the mission schools due to inadequate management capacity and resources of the missions to run their schools.
However, in recent years, the Missions have been demanding that administrative control of their schools be returned to them.
“It is a conversation that we will reopen and conclude when we return to power,” he said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang explained that as much as the NDC government would like the Missions to have the schools, it would be interested in ensuring that the Missions have the management capacity, the resources to pay staff, and the structures for open admission and fair.
During her tenure as Minister of Education, she said that while some Missions asked the government to hand over the schools, other religious entities asked the government to take over their schools due to the difficulty in managing academic institutions.
“We are ready to hand over the schools, but we don’t want to go back to the reason why the government took over the schools,” he said.
He assured the Missions a greater partnership in the management of schools for the benefit of children and described the contribution of the Missions to the development of the country’s educational system as enormous.
“The next NDC government will enhance its partnership with the Missions to improve the level of education in the country,” said Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.
Rt. The Rev. Daniel De-Graft Brace, bishop of the Diocese of Sekondi, thanked the running mate for her sincerity on the matter and assured her of the church’s support.
