Chelsea will punish us: Liverpool legend on need for defensive upgrade

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has warned that if the Reds do not improve defensively, Chelsea will cause them problems at the weekend.

The Reds had the best defense in the league last season, conceding just 33 goals on their way to dominating the Premier League.

Liverpool opened the title defense with a narrow 4-3 win over Leeds at Anfield on Saturday, and their defensive performance raised concerns among some fans.

Fingers pointed at Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s rear struggled to look solid against the new guys in the Premier League.

And Aldridge admits they will need to improve their defensive performance before their trip to Chelsea on Sunday.

The Liverpool legend is eager to regain defensive strength as soon as possible and believes that if they show the same kind of tremors at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s attack will punish the Reds.

“You can’t always trust your forwards to win games”, Aldridge wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“We have to keep a clean sheet again and I am sure they will be working on that in training for the Chelsea game.

“If we don’t defend properly at Stamford Bridge, we will be punished, so it’s a matter of making sure we get the basics right while doing the right thing going forward.

Jurgen Klopp will want his team to toughen up, as Chelsea have made a number of transfers in the attacking third over the course of the transfer window so far.
