The South American Soccer Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Monday that last-minute changes could be made to its qualifying tournament for the 2022 World Cup amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The region’s qualifiers are scheduled to begin in October, more than six months later than originally planned due to the global health crisis.
“In most operational aspects, FIFA will allow flexibility in relation to the match schedule and venues,” a CONMEBOL statement read.
CONMEBOL said that strict sanitary protocols will be adopted for the tournament, in accordance with the requirements in each of the 10 member nations of the confederation.
He added that a meeting with FIFA officials will be held on Tuesday to address competition-related issues “at the highest level.”
The region’s main club tournament, the Copa Libertadores, was due to resume on Tuesday, having been suspended in mid-March.
In the first round of the CONMEBOL qualifiers, which begins on October 8, Colombia hosts Venezuela, Uruguay is home to Chile, Bolivia visits Brazil, Paraguay hosts Peru and Ecuador travels to Argentina.
