Asamoah Gyan’s commercial manager Samuel Anim Addo has stated that the forward is not bothered by his slight of the new captaincy ranks of the national team.

On the advice of new Black Stars coach CK Akonnor, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Sunday a three-man leadership team to direct the affairs of the four-time African champions.

Swansea City forward Andre Ayew retained his position as main captain, but Atlético de Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey replaced Inter Milan defender Kwadwo Asamoah as first vice captain, while South Africa-based Maritzburg United goalkeeper Richard Ofori has been appointed second vice captain. .

Gyan, a former chief captain for the Black Stars, held the position of ‘captain general’, a position usually held by a high-level member of the team, until Sunday when the new order was announced.

The role of captaincy general was not included in the new list of leadership positions in the national team.

“Asamoah Gyan has had successful meetings with the Black Stars Management Committee,” Anim Addo told Nhyra FM.

“Asamoah Gyan camp never liked the idea of the ‘captain general’. There was no way he would put the armband on when he is not [main] captain never again.

“Due to his love for Ghana, he returned to play for the team at the request of the president [of Ghana] and other top officials even when he announced his retirement [from international duty last year]. “

At 34, Gyan is undeniably in the twilight of his career, with many asking him to leave the game entirely, or at least retire from international football.

Currently clubless since leaving NorthEast United of the Indian Super League earlier this year, the forward made his Ghana debut in a 2006 World Cup qualifying match against Somalia in 2003.

He has become Ghana’s most capped player and all-time top scorer, having played 109 games and scored 51 goals.

“Gyan believes that he is a role model for most players, regardless of his role in the national team,” added Anim Addo.

“At any time, he is willing to give brotherly support to any leader present and is only interested in serving Ghana in any capacity.

“Is [new leadership hierarchy] It is the best decision made by CK Akunnor. “

Gyan last played for Ghana at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, where the Black Stars suffered a disappointing knockout in the round of 16.

Ahead of the tournament, West Africans were embroiled in controversy when the forward sensationally announced that he was retiring from international duty a month before kicking off due to discontent at having been stripped of Ghana’s top captaincy post and instead gave him the role of captain general plus adviser.

He later overruled his decision and joined the Black Stars for the tournament after a plea from Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
