The University Professors Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its decision to withdraw teaching services for non-payment of the 2019/20 book and research allowance.

A press release issued on Monday, signed by the president and the national secretary, revealed that their decision is due to “the government’s commitment to pay the book and research assignments for the last academic year.”

UTAG intended to suspend all of its public university services as of Monday, September 15.

This was to protest the government’s failure to pay the allowance that it should have given them by July 2020.

Talking to JoyNewsThe President of the Association, Professor Charles Marfo, had regretted that every year the lecturers have to go through such an ordeal before the payments are made.

UTAG also said that while it sympathizes with the government for the financial challenges that Covid-19 has posed in the economy, it has also taken note of the distribution of government gifts and increases in spending in other sectors of the economy.

“Ours is not a contingency, ours is an established one that someone must commit to. And it’s not that we don’t sympathize, we sympathize with the government a lot, but we also think that the right thing should be done ”.

However, in its new press release, UTAG stated that it has gathered information through its discussion with people representing the government who strongly suggest that its call is being heeded.

Although UTAG stated that its members will withdraw their services, if the government does not meet its obligations by the end of September 2020.
