Ten students were killed in a fire in a school dormitory in the Kagera region of northwestern Tanzania.
Seven other students who suffered serious injuries have been hospitalized.
The dormitory housed children between the ages of six and ten.
Police have launched investigations and the cause of the fire has yet to be established.
The fire started in one of the dormitories of Byamungu English Secondary Primary School in Kyerwa District around 04:30 local time.
Kyerwa District Commissioner Rashid Mwaimu told the BBC that the bodies were burned beyond recognition and will need DNA testing to confirm the identity of the victims.
School fire tragedies occur often in the region and there are calls for authorities to improve security in institutions.
In July, three students died in the main city, Dar es Salaam, after a dormitory at the Islamic secondary school in Ilala caught fire.
