It was the first time that Tottenham manager José Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea and Manchester United, lost his first game of a Premier League season, failing to sign a backup option for Kane.
London: Dominic Calvert-Lewin produced the goal and James Rodríguez provided the spark on his debut as Everton opened their Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Tottenham on Sunday.
Calvert-Lewin passed defenders Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld to receive a Lucas Digne free kick and a header that cleared goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 10th minute of the second half.
Everton had squandered a much easier opportunity to take the lead in the first half when Richarlison missed an open goal. The Brazilian ran to Ben Davies’ stray backward pass and circled Lloris, but fired into an unprotected net from a tight angle.
At least Richarlison was getting closer to scoring. Tottenham forward Harry Kane was ineffective heading into goal, with only two touches in Everton’s penalty area.
It was the first time Tottenham manager José Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea and Manchester United, lost his first game of a Premier League season, failing to sign a backup option for Kane.
Everton’s biggest signing of the reduced summer break was James from Real Madrid, where he lost favor. And the Colombian midfielder was sharp on his debut, in just his second game since February, at the heart of the attacking threat and pinging with precision.
Another player who has been reunited with Carlo Ancelotti, Allan, who arrived from Napoli, was also dominant in midfield against an ineffective Tottenham.
It was the first time Everton had won on the road for one of the top six teams since 2013.
The victory was a sign of Everton’s potential to break into European places in Ancelotti’s first full season in charge of a team that dragged itself away from relegation danger to 12th place in July.
Mourinho also took over during the first half of last season when Tottenham finished sixth.
Vardy mesh strap
Timothy Castagne scored on his Leicester debut before Jamie Vardy scored two penalties in a 3-0 season-opener win over newcomer West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday.
Castagne, Atalanta’s defensive signing, hit the other end by heading a cross from Dennis Praet from Belgium in the 56th minute.
Vardy doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 74th minute after being pulled by Kyle Bartley.
Vardy was on target 10 minutes later, again from the spot, after James Justin was brought down by Dara O’Shea.
Vardy was the league’s top scorer last season that ended with empty stadiums. Fans are also excluded at the start of the new campaign due to coronavirus restrictions.
