Ghana’s News Agency claimed two awards on Friday at the 2019 Volta Regional Tourism Awards organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
The Agency received the award for best tourism-oriented media, and Edward Williams, its Hohoe correspondent, won the award for tourism writer of the year.
The award ceremony was held with the theme “Growing tourism beyond return.”
It recognized excellence in the sector and honored the entities that have contributed to the tourism development of the Region.
Akwasi Agyemang, GTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said that despite the global coronavirus shutdown, the industry was hopeful of survival thanks to government stimulus packages.
He said the upcoming hospitality training institute was part of efforts to advance the development of the sector and asked operators to register with the Authority to help the industry grow.
Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, said that the industry has great potential in the Region and asked investors and young people to consider investing in the sector.
He said the government’s quest to support the sector informed the implementation of projects and policies, and the diaspora return initiative, which was attracting support for the country’s tourism industry.
Alexander Kwame Nketia, GTA regional manager, said the coronavirus pandemic presents an opportunity for domestic tourism and called for increased capacity for local actors.
He also said packages and rates need to be revised to encourage local travel and entertainment.
He said the Authority plans to establish a destination management team to lead tourism development in the Region.
Dr. John Tampouri, Ag, CEO, Ho Teaching Hospital, said that the Volta region was the most suitable for the development of medical tourism and should be considered by investors.
Ho, based in Volta Premier Fm, won the radio category for tourism-oriented media, and Globafest Limited, operators of Volta One TV and Global Fm based in Ho, won the special recognition award for contributing to the development of the sector .
The Skyplus hotel was chosen as the best two-star hotel in the region and the African Hill Resort Hotel in Kabakaba Hills won the best one-star hotel award.
Skyplus Hotel was also awarded the Consistent Tourism Levy Payment award.
The Southern District of Afadzato won the award for Municipal Support for the Development and Promotion of Tourism, and the Technical University of Ho won the award for Excellence in Tourism Education and Training.
Mr. Hudson Ablordepey, Manager of the Volta View Hotel, received the honorary award for promoting tourism in the Region.
