The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has cut the grass for the start of the construction of the Wenchi Water Supply Project, in a ceremony at Jubilee Park in Wenchi.

Mowing the grass on Friday, September 11, 2020, on Day 2 of the 2-day working visit to the Bono region, President Akufo-Addo noted that Wenchi means a lot to followers of the Danquah-Dombo political tradition- Busia, as it is the home of Dr. KA Busia, Prime Minister of the Government of the Progress Party of the Second Republic.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “It was in 2002, under the rule of the second president of the fourth republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, that the existing Wenchi water supply system, with funding from the government and the European Union, was built, as part of the small town water supply plans initiated at that time. “

The existing water supply system is based on groundwater obtained from mechanized wells and supplies water only to the Wenchi municipality. An assessment by Ghana Water Co. Ltd. He indicated the poor condition of the existing system, and the recommendation was for a new water supply system, which will extract water from fresh water sources, guarantee the continuity of the water supply and comply with the usual requirements. -Rising demand for water in the catchment area.

“So you can understand my joy that once again it is a nuclear power plant government that has taken over to begin the construction of a new water supply system for Wenchi. This project is consistent with the commitment of the 2016 PNP Manifesto that provides “Water for All,” a key priority that we are committed to implementing, ”added the President.

To implement this project, the Akufo-Addo government has secured a thirty million euro (€ 30 million) credit line from the Belfius Bank of Belgium, with the support of the Belgian Export Credit Agency, Credendo.

After its completion, in thirty-six (36) months, the total supply capacity will be ten thousand seven hundred (10,700) cubic meters per day, which will be adequate to cover the demand for water in 2040 for an estimated population of about ninety-two thousand five hundred (92,500) people in towns such as Wenchi, Droboso, Yoyoano, Beposo, Asuano, Koase, Nkonsia, Wurompo and Awisa.

In these communities, the President explained, the water supply will be improved in quality, quantity and reliability.

“The prevalence of water-borne diseases, such as Guinea worm, cholera and dysentery, will be minimized, if not eliminated. In addition, this project will bring with it job opportunities, since the Contractor will contract the services of indigenous people during the construction period, ”said the President.

He also hoped that once the water supply project is complete, investors will take advantage of flagship government programs such as “One-District, One-Factory” to establish small and medium-scale factories to exploit the natural resources of the city. area, create employment opportunities for youth in the community and stimulate the growth and development of the local economy.

The government, the president assured, will not give up its efforts to increase access to water for all.

“Plans are well advanced for the construction of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Water Supply Project in the Ashanti Region, the Kpong Phase II Water Supply Project in the Eastern Region, the Eastern Region Water Supply Project of Tarkwa and the Sekondi-Takoradi Water Supply Project in the Western Region, Techiman Water Supply Project in the Bono East Region, Sunyani Water Supply Project in the Bono Region and Water Supply Project from Assin Fosu in the central region, which will provide water in response to the increasing demand for water in these areas, ”he added. .

The President continued: “Nananom, I am excited to be here once again and by the grace of God, and with four (4) more years for Nana and NPP, I will be here again, in thirty-six (36) months, to commissioning Wenchi’s water supply project. “
