At least 3 in 10 high school students (JHS) have reported attempting suicide in the past 12 months, the Ghana Psychological Association (GPA) revealed.

GPA disclosed this in a statement dated September 9, 2020, in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2020.

The WSPD, held on September 10 each year, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the reality of suicide and the consequent devastations it leaves for all.

In the statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Joy Anima Debrah, the GPA says that “1 in 10 adults in rural communities think about taking their own life.”

According to the statement, “2 in 10 upper secondary students report having attempted suicide in the past 12 months.”

It says that “among deaf teens who go to school, 1 in 10 students report having attempted suicide in the past 12 months.”

Additionally, he says that in sophomore schools, about 2 in 10 students report intentional self-harm or self-poisoning in their lifetime.

It also says that almost 3 in 10 police officers in urban Ghana report having had thoughts about taking their own lives during the previous 12 months.
