One group has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to reopen the electoral roll for repatriated Ghanaians who missed the initial voter registration exercise.

The group, known as the Ghanaian Repatriated Collation, is made up of Ghanaians who were unable to participate in the voter registration that took place recently because they were observing mandatory quarantine or had not yet returned to Ghana due to the border closure.

“Most of us were meeting the mandatory 14 days quarantine or they were yet to return to Ghana. Although they assured us that special arrangements would be made for us, nothing is forthcoming, ”the group said in a statement.

“We understand that as long as we arrive in Ghana at least 3 months before the general election, special arrangements will be made for those people to register, but it appears that such a guarantee is not available,” the group added in the statement.

The group fears that its members will be disenfranchised if they are not allowed to register before the start of the voter registration display exercise scheduled to begin on September 18, 2020.

“We appeal to your good craft to make special arrangements to help returnees in Ghana to register. We will be happy if our request is considered, ”the group appealed to the Electoral Commission.

In July, the lead coordinator for the Ghanaian repatriated collection, Dunyo Kingsley, also expressed concern about the possibility that Ghanaians stranded abroad may be disenfranchised.

Compiling a new voter registration started on Tuesday, June 30, and ended on Tuesday, August 6, 2020.

However, due to the temporary closure of Ghana’s borders to the international community in March 2020, following the outbreak of COVID-19 To minimize the spread, Ghanaians who were abroad were unable to participate in the registration process.
