Former Ghana international Michael Essien has secured his first coaching position after being appointed to the FC Nordsjælland coaching staff for the 2020/21 season.

The former Chelsea player earned his coach badges by studying the working environment around the first team and FC Nordsjælland academies. Essien now officially joins the Danish club’s coaching staff with the title of player coach.

The 37-year-old will work closely with head coach Flemming Pedersen. As an assistant, Essien will participate in training alongside the players to help implement the drills and ideas in the best possible way, as well as contribute further input to the coaching group evaluations of the subsequent training session.

Nordsjælland sporting director Jan Laursen explained on the club’s website why they decided to keep Essien after he spent time with them.

“Michael made a very positive impression here during his visit and we continued the dialogue with him after he left. We felt that he was excited by what he experienced here through our philosophy, the people he met at the club and that our environment inspired him.

The club’s head coach Flemming Pedersen also spoke on the club’s website about the prospect of working with a seasoned personality like Essien.

“In the coaching staff we have experienced Michael Essien as curious and hungry for knowledge before and after training sessions, but at the same time also contributing and giving among players during training sessions. His career and experience speak for themselves ”.

Essien will have her first day at Farum on September 10.
