RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann told ESPN that center-back Dayot Upamecano will remain with the Bundesliga club for the 2020-21 season, despite interest from Manchester United.

Upamecano, 21, impressed during Leipzig’s run to the Champions League semifinals in Lisbon last month and recently signed a contract extension until June 2023.

Sources told ESPN United they are targeting Upamecano, who made his debut in France on Saturday, to bolster his defensive options, but despite his interest, Nagelsmann is convinced he will remain in Leipzig for the next season.

“He [Upamecano] will be here for the season. I’m sure of that, “Nagelsmann told ESPN.” As for the future, I am not sure as he is very talented. Many clubs will want to buy; next season it might be real that he leaves the club. But this season he will stay. “

Timo Werner has left Leipzig for Chelsea in a £ 47.7 million deal and the club’s best players are constantly on the radar of Europe’s best teams. But Nagelsmann is confident in the club’s system to recruit the next batch of young stars to replace those who are leaving.

“It is normal when working with young people that clubs try to find talented young people in the transfer market,” he added. “It is normal for bigger clubs to try to buy these players.

“You have to deal with it, you have to step up when you buy new players or find new players. Our scout should be good and we have made a lot of good decisions in the transfer market.”
