The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) has hailed the promise of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to absorb 50 percent of the fees for higher education students if they are elected to power on December 7, 2020.

He said the intervention, if implemented, would reduce the “enormous” financial burden faced by students, eradicate “frequent” student dropouts and increase enrollment at the tertiary level.

Isaac Jay Hyde, chairman of NUGS, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday after the NDC announced the package at the launch of the Party’s manifesto for the 2020 general election.

He said that for a long time, the Union had been advocating for the absorption of half of the fees paid by higher education students and praised the NDC for the foresight.

Mr. Hyde said that although the Student Loan Trust Fund was established to provide loan assistance to students, in addition to the amount being relatively small, the inability of students to provide guarantors hampered them.

The NUGS president said that had led many students to cancel their programs and drop out of school.

“The guarantee system over the years has been a major problem. As I speak to you, we have about 31,000 student loan recipients, but every year, students are dropping out because they can’t get into the scheme because usually the thousands of vulnerable and less privileged people get a relative who is an SSNIT contributor. it becomes a challenge, “he said.

Mr. Hyde said “… and just like at NUGS, as a student union whose interest is to defend the interest of students, we believe this is commendable.”

“We therefore congratulate NDC for working behind the scenes and doing good research and proposing an intervention that will address the plight of students and enhance the development of the country’s human resources.”

However, he called on political parties to go beyond their manifestos and commit to ensuring that their promises are kept for the benefit of society.
