The Special Initiatives Development Ministry says that the standard bearer of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has been puzzled by the success of the One-Village dam program, making unsubstantiated claims about the program.
The former president has rebuked the Akufo Addo government for what he says is the waste of taxpayers’ money on a failed single-dam project in a village.
Addressing Manwe Naa and his people in the Upper West region as part of his campaign tour, Mr. Mahama stated that even the shelters that have been built instead of the dams as promised by the government have been done badly and are of no use. Not at all.
“… The promises sounded great and the Ghanaians said give them a chance. Today the dams they talked about are shelters, they are not even proper shelters because most of our shelters can store water during the dry season. These shelters when the minority went to inspect them in January-February, most were dry. Even a few cows can drink all the water in a single dam in a village. So damming a single village has been a huge waste of taxpayers’ money. We dug dams under GSOP, you should go see the dams we dug, huge, with water all year round and good for irrigation purposes. “
But responding to Mahama’s claims in an interview with Kasapa News Pomaa Kyekyeku, Director of Communications for the Ministry of Special Initiatives Development, Moro Kabore refuted the claims by insisting that earth dams have been built and not canoes.
“As I speak to you, about 400 earth dams have been completed. The success of the single dam program in one village has stunned former President Mahama, I’m sure he didn’t mean what he said. The December 7 elections are approaching and since Mahama has no message, all he has to do is condemn the good work of the Akufo Addo government. The beneficiaries of the dams that have been built will determine whether what has been provided to them is a dam or a dugout and whether it has served them or not. I am not sure that it is Mr. Mahama who has to speak, he should let the residents themselves make that decision. “
Moro Kabore was confident that by the end of November 2020, the 560 small dams of land promised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would have been completed.
