The standard bearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has rebuked the Akufo-Addo government for wasting taxpayers’ money on what he says is a failed project of a single dam in a village.
The nuclear power plant before the 2016 general elections promised to build dams in villages in the northern part of the country to provide enough water to farmers to ensure year-round agriculture, as well as for domestic purposes.
Around 560 dams are expected to be built by the end of 2020. However, many have raised issues with the type of dams being built and describe them as more like canoes.
Addressing Manwe Naa and his people in the Upper West region as part of his campaign tour, Mr. Mahama stated that even the shelters that have been built instead of the dams as promised by the government have been done badly and are of no use. Not at all.
“In 2016, when the nuclear power plant came with the promise of a dam in a village, I personally asked them what kind of dam is he talking about because there are different types of dams, but they refused to answer. I said I hope they will not build canoes for us because we no longer need canoes after we decide to provide clean water for our people, most of our communities have water systems or water wells in small towns. So my hope is that the dams you are talking about are for irrigation so our young people can go into agriculture or gardening in the dry season. But there was no response. “
Mr Mahama added: “The promises sounded great and the Ghanaians said let’s try them. Today the dams they talked about are shelters, they are not even proper shelters because most of our shelters can store water during the dry season. These shelters when the minority went to inspect them in January-February, most were dry. Even a few cows can drink all the water in a single dam in a village. So damming a single village has been a huge waste of taxpayers’ money. We dug dams under GSOP, you should go see the dams that we dug under GSOP, massive, with year-round water and good for irrigation purposes. “
He urged people not to fall for the sweet promises of the PNP as the campaign heats up before the December 7 elections.
