Security analyst Colonel (rtd) Festus Aboagye fears that Ghana’s democracy may be backing down, citing recent attacks on a member of parliament to make his point.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a member of parliament for the Odododiodio constituency, was beaten to pulp on Tuesday, August 1, 2020, by persons suspected of being national security agents.

Colonel (rtd) Aboagye said that if the Odododiodio deputy was really attacked by National Security agents, then they have acted in violation of the law.

It is not yet clear why the MP was targeted, but Festus Aboagye said it “potentially suggests that our democracy is taking risks and eroding rather than improving.”

He made the comments during an interview on Joy News.

The security analyst, who is also a teaching consultant at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Center (KAIPTC), said the attack on the parliamentarian adds to the numerous pockets of violence that threaten the upcoming general elections in December.

“December 7, 2020 would not be a quiet day because people have already developed strategies to solve all problems between now and then, through the use of force,” he said.

Meanwhile, the legislator from the Democratic National Congress has explained that he was assaulted in front of the James Town police station while working to secure the bail of a journalist.

He told the media that he had asked the journalist to take pictures of some projects he had undertaken in his constituency and was later told that the journalist had been arrested by the police.

Vanderpuye told JoyNews that 12 people from Homeland Security approached him and launched an attack on him at the police station.

He said he was ordered to leave after brutalizing him.

According to him, had it not been for the intervention of the police, the worst could have happened.
