“It was a bit tricky” – Pepe Reina opens up to Liverpool managers during his time at Anfield

Pepe Reina has hinted that he did not have the best relationships with his former Liverpool managers Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers.

After spending the 2013/14 season on loan in Napoli following the arrival of Simon Mignolet, Rodgers ended the Spanish Reds’ nine-year career when he was sold to Bayern Munich after being considered over-requisite at Anfield.

And answering questions in a live Instagram Q&A, the keeper suggested there was a difficult relationship with the Northern Irishman, as well as incompatibility with former England coach Hodgson during his brief stint at Merseyside.

“One is not bad, but a bit tricky is Brendan Rodgers,” Reina said when asked who her worst manager was during her career.

“Then with Hodgson I had some difficulties, his way of understanding soccer was very different from mine.”

The now 37-year-old was brought to Rafa Benítez Liverpool in 2005 from Villarreal and enjoyed the best football of his career under his compatriot.

However, the World Cup winner opted for a different former manager than the Reds when choosing the best he ever played with.

“The best? Kenny Dalglish and Del Bosque,” he said.

Reina is currently on loan at AC Milan’s Aston Villa and in the same Q&A, the missed shot revealed that he does not intend to stay at Villa Park and is considering retiring and a possible coaching career when it is time to hang up his gloves.

“After the loan period with Aston Villa, I have to go back,” said Reina. “I think it will be difficult. I have 1-2 years left in my career.”

“I think my time in football will end after next year in Milan.”

“You never know in the future, but as a player I won’t have a chance. As a coach, who knows.
