The Ghana Education Service (GES) has postponed the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year until January 2021.

The decision to postpone the academic year, which was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic in the country, was made after further consultations with stakeholders.

However, sophomores in high school (JHS) and high school (SHS) would return to school from October 5 to December 15 to complete their academic year.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, announced this Sunday in her 16th speech to the nation on the measures taken to control the spread of the Coronavirus disease.

“The Ghana Education Service, after further consultation, decided to postpone the remainder of the academic year for all Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Primary, JHS1 and SHS1 students. The next academic year will resume in January 2021 with the adjustments necessary in the curriculum to ensure that nothing is lost from the previous year, ”said the president.

“Proper provisions will also be made so that the presence, at the same time, in schools of all flows of students, can occur safely,” he added.

JHS 2, SHS 2 return to school on October 5

The chairman noted that JHS would operate with a class size of 30, while SHS would operate with a class size of 25.

He added that students would be in school for 10 weeks to study and write their end-of-term exams.

President Akufo-Addo further noted that before the reopening, all schools would be fumigated and disinfected.

He said that as part of the measures to control the spread of the coronavirus, all students would receive reusable face masks, as was done with JHS and SHS seniors who reported to the school earlier in the year.

The two JHS students will also receive a hot meal a day.

“SHS 2 students in pensions must return to their different dormitories on October 5, while day students, fully respecting COVID-19 protocols, will travel from home to their respective schools on the same date. Prior to reopening, all middle and high schools will be fumigated and disinfected.

As with the senior year, JHS and SHS students, all JHS 2 and SHS 2 students, as well as all teaching and non-teaching staff, will receive reusable masks. Each school will have Veronica Buckets, gallons of liquid soap, rolls of tissue paper, thermometer guns, and 200-milliliter containers of disinfectant. JHS 2 students will receive one hot meal a day, ”added President Akufo-Addo.
