It appears that the practice of lynching elderly women labeled ‘witches’ is spiraling out of control as new events of such barbaric acts unfold.

Not long ago, it was Akua Denteh, this time it is Madame Meri Ibrahim, a supposed 60-year-old witch who has been attacked and killed by residents of Sumpini, near Busunu, in the West Gonja Township of the Savannah region.

Madame Meri suffered serious machete injuries.

He is in critical condition at Damongo Hospital receiving medical attention.

DGN Online deduced that the victim allegedly tried to kill a young man in the area, hence the attack.

Madame Meri in a video narrated that she and two other women from the Sumpini community were accused of witchcraft.

According to her, the other two women were able to flee the community to avoid any attack.

Mrs. Meri revealed that she was at home when some neighbors arrived and accused her of being a witch, which she denied, but that did not prevent the neighbors from attacking her with cutlasses and other dangerous objects.

She said her home was ransacked and properties destroyed by residents.

It will be recalled that Ms. Akua Denteh, a 90-year-old woman was horribly lynched in Kafaba in the East Gonja Township of the Savannah region.

The Parliament of Ghana is working on a Witchcraft Bill to help people accused of witchcraft.

The proposed witchcraft bill includes the prohibition of professional witchcraft or sorcery, the prohibition of the accusation of witchcraft, participation in the declaration of a person as a witch or wizard, and the penalty against the chief or chieftain who encourages witchcraft.

This bill has been necessary because of the gruesome lynching of Ms. Akua Denteh, a 90-year-old woman in Kafaba, in the East Gonja Township of the Savannah region.
