For the first time in a long time, Ghana’s Dancehall and Reggae genre saw a new generation of artists choose awards for the category at the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

For years Shatta Wale, Samini and Stonewboy have managed to win the category award, alternating between them every year.

Including last year, Stonebwoy had taken home the Reggae / Dancehall Artist of the Year award five times in a row.

But, due to the ban for him and Shatta Wale, due to a fight between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale year, the award has new winners.

J.Derobie, a new artist from Empawa de Eazi, took home the Dancehall Song of the Year on Saturday with his song ‘Poverty’.

J.Derobie had registered the song in Mr Eazi’s Empawa100 contest, which sought to discover new talents in Africa.

The song was selected and J.Derobie made it to the top ten with artists like Joeboy from Nigeria.

Among all the songs released by the Empawa artists in the year under review, Poverty won the hearts of many.

The video was also the first song to reach 1 million views on YouTube, the Empawa platform.

Since then, J Derobie has released many songs, including the remix of Poverty with Popcann, one of Jamaica’s celebrated artists.

He has also released an EP titled Nungua Diaries.

Second, taking home the award for Reggae / Dancehall Artist of the Year was Ras Kuuku.

The artist who has been in the industry for years has finally picked up the award.

Ras Kuuku in 2019 released an album Kuntunkununku the Heaviest that earned him praise from people in the industry.

Meanwhile, Charterhouse, organizers of VGMA, have yet to announce when the ban on Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy will be lifted.
