McKennie has become the first US player to sign for Juventus and the club’s first signing this summer since Andrea Pirlo replaced Maurizio Sarri as coach earlier this month.

Sources told ESPN on Wednesday that Pirlo was a key figure in getting the deal out of line.

Juve beat Premier League clubs Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton and Newcastle United with the signing of McKennie.

He will become the last American international to join one of the best clubs in Europe after Christian Pulisic joined Chelsea and Gio Reyna moved to Borussia Dortmund.

McKennie spent three years in the Bundesliga with Schalke, where he made 91 appearances and scored five goals.

McKennie will try to win his first major trophy in club football as Juve aims to clinch a tenth consecutive Serie A title.
