The Ghana Engaged Drivers Association (GCDA) has expressed its utter disappointment with former President and standard-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama for promising to legalize and regulate the operation of motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, in the event of who will win on December 7th. center.
Drivers consider that the legalization of motorcycles for commercial purposes is contrary to the 2012 Road Traffic Regulations and Legislative Instrument (LI) 2180, which prohibits the marketing of motorcycles in Ghana.
GCDA President Charles Danso, in an interview on Yensempa on Onua FM on Wednesday, August 26, categorically stated that legalizing the okada is like introducing genocide in Ghana.
Mr. Danso wants former President Mahama to be brought to court for publicly announcing his intention to legalize the operation of the okada in the country for commercial purposes.
“Former President Mahama must be brought to court because what he is saying is like introducing a genocide in which weapons are handed over to kill people.
“We have laws that prohibit the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes and this same law was published when Mr. Mahama was president,” he said.
The Road Traffic Regulation, according to Mr. Danso, only allows the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to register motorcycles for courier services, but not for commercial purposes, so he does not understand the reason behind the intention. of the former president.
Mr. Danso lamented the mutilation that Okada had suffered in society, counting the large number of lives lost in motorcycle accidents, as well as those that have been rendered inoperative.
He regretted that the okada has caused more harm than good in society and therefore drivers would forever resist any government legalizing it.
He threatened that the day the government commercialized the okada operation in Ghana would be the same day that all road safety laws regulating commercial drivers would cease.
The president of the committed drivers called on the political parties to desist from politicking with issues of national interest.
