Musician fined ¢ 2,400 for stealing items belonging to Shoprite

A Circuit Court in Accra asked a 30-year-old musician to pay a fine of ¢ 2,400 for stealing items valued at ¢ 167.87, belonging to the Shoprite Company.

By default, David Ike, an Australian, would serve a three-month jail term.

He denied the charges, but was found guilty after the trial.

Ike is also facing trial in a different court for alleged unauthorized use of a narcotic.

The convict in his defense told the court that he collected the items and was going to pay, but was told that the place had closed.

In sentencing, Judge Ruby Naa Aryeteey, a Superior Court judge who serves as an additional Circuit Court judge, considered the facts that he was detained for two years.

Additionally, all stolen items were recovered, the cost, since Mr. Ike was a foreigner and did not have a fixed place of residence.

Police Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the court that the author is a security guard at the West Hills shopping center, located in Weija, while Ike did not have a fixed address.

On August 8, 2018, at approximately 2000 hours, while customers were shopping at the mall, the convict also entered the Shoprite section of the mall and grabbed a bag, where he loaded it with pieces of Cring Crackers cookie, a soft soap. , two pieces of Lindor chocolate, two sets of floral tissues, underwear, two plastic bottles of Voltic water, a packet of Peanut Burger and a bag, all valued at ¢ 167.85.

He said that Mr. Ike did not pay and left the store, but was stopped by said security man who asked him to present the receipts that covered the items.

Inspector Ahiabor said that after failing to provide the receipt, it was handed over to the police officer at the post and a search revealed a package of a substance suspected of being a narcotic.

He was arrested again by the New Weija Police along with the display for investigations.

Inspector Ahiabor said in his warning statement, Mr. Ike admitted the crimes while the evidence was sent to the forensic laboratory for examination.
