The former Blaugrana leader is among the least impressed by actions that could take the club’s legend elsewhere
Barcelona are “erasing a myth” in their mismanagement of Lionel Messi, says Hristo Stoichkov, with the La Liga giants accused of “kicking the best player in history in the back.”
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner threatens to make his way through the Camp Nou exits.
Messi, disappointed by mismanagement on and off the pitch in Catalonia, has informed Barça of his desire to move on.
The Blaugrana are being cornered by their talisman captain, with the Argentine only hired until the summer of 2021.
A move elsewhere may become the only option for everyone involved, as teams like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are strongly linked with moves to bring an all-time great to their books.
Stoichkov is puzzled by how this situation has been allowed to occur, with Barca shooting himself in the foot and “smearing” the name of a player who has served him with such distinction.
The ex-forward Blaugrana was enraged TUDN: “We are erasing a myth, we are kicking the best player in the history of Barcelona in the back.
“We are staining his name, his charisma. I am a member, so I say we are tainting it.
“This board has ruined everything. It seems as if they want to pit the fans against the players.
“I won successive league titles, the club’s first European Cup, I don’t know how to return the love of the fans.
“But this board doesn’t show his face. Journalists should add more fuel to the flames. As a club, it’s unfortunate. “
Although frustrated by what is happening at Barça, Stoichkov is not too surprised, as his own departure from the Camp Nou in 1995 came under a cloud.
The legendary Bulgarian added: “I don’t know why we, the players who have made history at Barcelona, are always shown the back door.
“They think we are going to bother them because we want to take away the presidency or something like that.
“I don’t know what’s going on in their heads.”
Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been coming under increasing pressure, but has indicated his intention to continue in his position until the club’s next election in March 2021.
