The Volta Regional Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP), Madam Rejoice Afi Agyagbo, says high school students (JHS) who reported having suffered a food poisoning incident in the region were treated and discharged.
About 21 students from four JHS in Ho were rushed to Ho municipal hospital on Thursday, after complaining of stomach aches and malaise, dizziness and weakness.
The previous day’s meal of plain rice, bean stew and egg was suspected to have caused food poisoning.
Ho municipal education director Raphael Amenyo said students from Holy Spirit Basic JHS, Royal Praise, New Seed International and Volta Rising Star JHS complained of stomachaches on Thursday, a day after eating.
The GSFP coordinator, who spoke to the Ghanaian news agency on Friday after the public outcry for the safety of his children, appealed to school authorities to ensure that the free meals they were given were eaten hot.
He said some of the affected students revealed that they had eaten their meals almost 6 hours after they were served, noting that students who ate the same meals at the time they were served did not suffer the same fate as others.
He denied the claim that the students had been admitted to the hospital, saying they “were treated and released accordingly.”
He said that the Municipal Authorities met with the heads of the JHS and were particularly in charge of supervising the initiative of “a hot meal a day” to prevent its recurrence.
Mr. Amenyo said that on Monday he met with all the catering service providers involved in the initiative to draw a common front.
