Manchester United’s financial power means they are in a better position to continue rebuilding their team after the shutdown than any other club in England.
United has long considered its next big team to be a mix of world-class shopping and local talent developed by the academy.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already shown that people like Brandon Williams, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are a big part of United’s future.
They have already made long-term investments in Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, and are actively seeking to finish the puzzle by spending heavily on Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, and Saul Niguez.
This is how a United XI and its substitutes could see themselves in 2023 to contest the Premier League title, marking a decade since they were the last champions under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Goalkeeper – Dean Henderson (current age 23)
He joined the Manchester United academy at age 14 and has increased his reputation in the past two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.
Only Liverpool have conceded fewer goals than The Blades with Henderson’s ten clean sheets that made their way into England coach Gareth Southgate’s thoughts for Euro 2020.
Although United has had David de Gea as their No. 1 for nearly a decade, Henderson will replace him at some point.
Back – Aaron Wan-Bissaka (22)
A complete old-fashioned defender who knows how to defend himself adequately, usually timing his challenges perfectly.
Television expert Jamie Carragher hailed him as “the best individual defender for a full back in the world” after keeping Raheem Sterling quiet in Manchester’s final derby
Eyebrows rose when United paid Crystal Palace £ 50 million for Wan-Bissaka last summer, but immediately made the first team their own.
His 99 successful tackles this season have only been surpassed by Ricardo Pereira of Leicester and it looks like he will be a regular player for United for years to come.
Back Center – Kalidou Koulibaly (28)
United will not be alone admiring Koulibaly if the dominant Senegalese central defender can leave Napoli, Liverpool and PSG are also among the stakeholders.
But United’s need is probably greater than any of those clubs, as they look for a powerful partner for Harry Maguire at the back.
Considered a defensive wall, post-coronavirus transfer market deflation means it can only cost a £ 60m bargain, beyond most clubs, but not United.
Back Center – Harry Maguire (27)
Being named United’s captain in his first season at Old Trafford tells him all about the impact Maguire has had since his record £ 80 million move from Leicester.
He showed that he could prosper on the big stage by impressing England at the 2018 World Cup, Maguire has been United’s best player in a fluctuating campaign, and Solskjaer did not hesitate to give him the bracelet permanently when Ashley Young joined Inter Milan in January.
Left Back – Brandon Williams (19)
He made a great impression since breaking into United’s team on the left side, forcing Luke Shaw to try a new position as left-center center back.
Her commitment as a young man from the academy is a throwback to the Class 92 era with Gary Neville noting: “He has that look in the eyes of someone who would eat his opponent’s nose to win the game.”
But Williams also has quality going forward and scored a major goal in the 3-3 draw against Sheffield United after Solskjaer’s team was 3-0 down.
Midfield – Bruno Fernandes (25)
Bru-no’s singing filled Old Trafford from the moment the Portuguese game creator arrived in January.
Solskjaer loved Fernandes both for his leadership qualities and for his soccer skills, and the Reds have not lost any of the nine games he has played.
United fans love a player with arrogance, Eric Cantona, comes to mind, and Fernandes’ stutter and penalty against Watford singled him out as someone who will embrace the Theater of Dreams.
Midfield – Saúl Niguez (25)
Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay have done a good job helping to shore up United’s bottom line as defensive midfielders, but Saul Niguez is the upgrade Solskjaer needs to go from the top four challengers to winning great trophies.
The Spanish international is entering his best years as he has been a key part of Atlético de Madrid’s success with Diego Simeone.
His defensive efforts to stifle Mo Salah when Atlético knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League shortly before the lockout highlighted that he was in first position.
Midfield – Paul Pogba (27)
He has sought to leave Old Trafford for so long, but changing circumstances around the world may see the French World Cup winner stick with Manchester United and become a talisman for a more successful new era.
The truth is that his suitors, Real Madrid and Juventus, can no longer afford anything like United’s £ 100m starting price.
And when football resumes, it will be a totally fit Pogba to play in place of the one who struggled with injuries and last played on Boxing Day.
Can Pogba really change his career at United? Wayne Rooney once made a formal request to leave, but ended up being the club’s record scorer.
Attack / Right Forward – Jadon Sancho (20)
After their ‘noisy neighbors’ have brushed their noses for so many years, how gratifying it would be for Manchester United to sign the most talented boy in the city’s academy and make him a world star.
Sancho left town to go to Borussia Dortmund after feeling that his prospects for the first team were limited. He has shone in Germany and has already scored 27 goals in the Bundesliga, the youngest in history to do so, in addition to winning 11 games in England, scoring twice.
The flying winger would cost United a record Premier League transfer fee, but it fits perfectly with United’s philosophy.
Center-Forward – Moussa Dembele (23)
Having lost Erling Haaland and Tottenham by putting Harry Kane out of the market at £ 200 million, United’s search for a genuine center-forward is likely to lead them to Lyon, where the exciting Moussa Dembele can be bought for £ 65 million.
Dembele’s potential was evident to British fans at Fulham and Celtic and his play has accelerated in recent years in Lyon, scoring 42 goals in 58 starts.
He is able to lead the line, he has great movement and he will find the network.
Attack / Left Forward – Marcus Rashford (22)
21st century poster for the famous United Academy. It is already a legend how he responded to a surprising call from Louis van Gaal at the age of 17 with two debut goals in Europe, and then another double against Arsenal a few days later.
Hailing from Manchester, he has already become one of the most influential players in the locker room and has a long list of spectacular goals.
Look at his most threatening side on the left side, where he can cut and become a goal threat.
And the bank won’t be bad either … Luke Shaw
He appears to be closing in again after suffering a terrible time with injuries.
His duel with Brandon Williams on the left side will become very interesting in the coming years.
Jude Bellingham
Prodigious 16-year-old midfielder currently in the city of Birmingham. All the best clubs want it, including United.
He will remain a teenager in 2023 but will demand a regular place by then.
Scott McTominay
One of Jose Mourinho’s rare positive legacies at Old Trafford.
He gave McTominay a chance and the Scotsman responded by showing the right attitude in the middle of the park.
Jack Grealish
He has the X factor on the ball that United fans love and have missed seeing in the past few years since. He could play in midfield or more on a front three.
Mason Greenwood
He has a dozen United goals to his credit and is still only 18 years old.
There has been a buzz around the center-forward from a very young age and will develop over the next two seasons.
Daniel James
He is a wild card, but United will always find a place for him in the team due to his breakneck pace that would affect any defense.
Joel Pereira
United may not feel the need to sign another experienced assistant goalkeeper in the Sergio Romero mold if Pereira continues his development. Currently loaned with Hearts in Scotland.
