Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig 1-0 to increase their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to seven points. It was a hard-fought victory for Die Roten, who was left without star forward Robert Lewandowski. Here are three key stats from the huge win on the road.
Bayern get the job done despite being outclassed
It’s not often that Rekordmeister records fewer shots than his opponents. However, that was the case on Saturday when Leipzig edged out the visitors. The hosts recorded 14 shots while the visitors recorded nine. This was actually the exact number of shots Die Roten took when the clubs first met in December.
Die Roten’s nine shots were one of the lowest shooting totals they have ever had in a Bundesliga game this season. Only in their matchday 6 match against FC Cologne, there were fewer shots. One of the clear parallels between these two performances was that Lewandowski was not in the lineup for either game.
Lewandowski’s absence has an effect on the overall production of Flick’s attacking players, but they found a way to get the job done against Leipzig without their star striker on the field. They took the opportunity that was presented to them and in the end it was the more clinical side.
Strong defensive performance
Going into this match, Leipzig had only failed to score in two Bundesliga games this season. While their defensive record has been a prominent reason for their success, offensively they have also remained consistent.
After conceding three goals to Leipzig in their first meeting of the season, Die Roten was able to keep opponents scoreless on Saturday to become the third Bundesliga club this season to record a clean sheet against Leipzig. This could turn out to be the biggest clean sheet performance of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign for the defending champions.
Muller reaches 15 assists
Thomas Muller’s assist prepared Leon Goretzka for the only goal of the match. It was Muller’s 15th assist of the season as he continues to lead the Bundesliga in assists. This is only the second time in his career that he has recorded 15 assists or more in a single Bundesliga season.
