President Nana Addo Dankwa has urged Ghanaians to celebrate Easter quietly and warned against breaking social distancing rules during the holidays, in an attempt to curb the rise of the COVID-19 disease.
In an Easter message on Thursday, he called for all forms of public gathering and revelry to be avoided, noting that while the country had made considerable progress in fighting the disease over the past year, “we are by no means out of the woods. yet “.
Therefore, all Easter conventions, picnics, parties, social gatherings should be avoided. Nightclubs and pubs will be closed. Concerts, funerals and spectators going to stadiums to watch football games are prohibited until further notice.
However, religious services are allowed, but for a maximum of two hours. And private burials with no more than 25 people can take place with the strict application of social distancing rules.
President Akufo-Addo said it was imperative that the public avoid complacency and strictly adhere to established protocols that helped Ghana control the spread of the disease before Christmas last year.
Those gains, he said, will be protected at all costs, warning that the police will guarantee strict compliance with the restrictions and that “anyone found to be in breach of them will be treated in accordance with the law.”
“Collectively, since then we have worked hard to ensure a marked reduction in the number of active cases. The government together with the security services will make sure that this time these profits are protected.
“Let us be the guardians of others until the covid-19 is eradicated and does not pose any more threats to our lives and livelihoods,” he emphasized.
Touching on the essence of Easter, President Akufo-Addo pointed out that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the foundation of the Christian faith, symbolizes God’s Plan of Salvation for the redemption of humanity from sin and the grave.
He said the season was a good opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus Christ made, learn the Christian virtues of faith, hope, love and forgiveness, and the assurance that such sacrifice would cleanse the nation of the scourge of the pandemic. .
“I know that this is not how we wanted to celebrate Easter. However, like Christ he rose again on the third day. I am sure that Ghana and indeed the entire world will be resurrected as we celebrate Christ’s victory over sin, death and the grave.
“The blood shed on the cross will heal our land and cleanse us of our iniquities. Just as Christ was resurrected, Ghana will also rise up, ”he said, confident that the Ghanaian economy“ will come back again. The future is bright. “
The president also appealed to Ghanaians to make the Easter holiday period free from the usual road accidents that characterize the festive period.
“I am hopeful that this Holy Week will be celebrated without traffic accidents,” he urged, adding: “As we have done with the covid-19 security protocols. Let’s also embrace a positive road safety culture and keep our families and our nation safe. “
