Bayern Munich dug deep to emerge victorious from Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Leon Goretzka’s goal in the first half ensured that Rekordmeister beat his rivals for the title. Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer made sure Leipzig was held in check for a major Bundesliga victory.
Hansi Flick was forced to make three changes to the team that defeated VfB Stuttgart in the last round. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting replaced the injured Robert Lewandowski in attack. Lucas Hernández and Joshua Kimmich replaced suspended Jerome Boateng and Alphonso Davies. The German coach also bet on Leroy Sane over Serge Gnabry in attack.
RB Leipzig also made a couple of changes for this game. Dayot Upamecano replaced Marcel Halstenberg in central defense, while Kevin Kampl was replaced by Nordi Mukiele in the starting lineup.
It was not a chaotic start for the game as RB Leipzig had reportedly planned to hurt Die Roten. Both teams went head to head, restraining each other so as not to create opportunities in the game. The defenders and midfielders went head-to-head, winning individual duels to keep the attackers calm in the final third.
After more than half an hour of intense football, which at times felt like a game of chess between the two coaches, Die Roten opened the scoring with a well-worked goal. Thomas Muller went to the author line and showed great composure to lift his head to find Goretzka on the edge of the area. The German midfielder hammered the ball past Peter Gulacsi and took a much-needed lead in the 38th minute.
Die Roten finished the half strong as pressure increased in Leipzig’s third. Sane was about to score the second goal of the game with a sweet volley from the edge of the area. Gulacsi showed great reflexes to quell the shot.
Julian Nagelsmann’s men came full blast in the second half. They were aggressively pushing higher on the field, inducing errors from all four of Die Roten’s defenders. At one point, Niklas Sule found himself in trouble when Leipzig was pressing high, but played the ball from behind comfortably.

Manuel Neuer also had to make two or three big saves to keep Leipzig down. The home side was riddling the goal throughout the game, but Rekordmeister managed to maintain his composure and claim victory. The victory ensured that Bayern were seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. It was not a classic performance, but a brave one, foreshadowing long before some matches against Paris Saint-Germain.
