Ms Nelly Mensah, a registered mental health nurse in the Department of Psychiatry at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital says the facility continued to record high cases of epilepsy.

He said that in 2020, for example, the hospital recorded 506 cases out of 2,006 patients examined with 204 men and 302 women.

Ms. Mensah said other conditions of concern were included; Schizophrenia, delirium and depression.

He explained that epilepsy was a chronic disorder that caused recurrent and unprovoked seizures due to some irregular activities in the brain.

Ms Mensah said that epilepsy was a fairly common neurological disorder affecting 65 million people worldwide with various factors such as high fever, head injury, low blood sugar and alcohol withdrawal causing the seizures.

She mentioned commonly reported triggers such as lack of sleep, illness or fever, stress, bright lights, caffeine, alcohol, medications or drugs, and skipping meals, overeating, and allergies to specific food ingredients.

The rest are unusual sights, smells, and sounds.
